Voice Lessons
Since 2014, I have had the great joy of teaching students how to find their authentic voice. During that time, I received a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from The Juilliard School, and I continue to study vocal technique and pedagogy in order to give my students top-notch training. I believe in meeting students where they are in their vocal development, and working together to find joy and ease in singing. I guide my students to release what they think their voice “should” sound like, and lead them to embrace their unique gifts.
I teach a variety of genres, mainly focusing on classical, musical theatre, and pop. My teaching is based in bel canto techniques, with an emphasis on breath management as the basis for healthy phonation (regardless of what genre the student is studying). My goal with all of my students is to achieve healthy, free, and joyful singing!

Testimonials
“Our daughter worked with Shelby prior to and during her college vocal auditions. Shelby was extremely helpful in every way. She has had the experience of applying, recording pre-screen materials, and auditioning, which was especially valuable to us. Her insights on the colleges and conservatories were spot on. She has friends and teachers at many of the top conservatories and that was a huge bonus. When you talk to Shelby you can tell that she is kind and giving which are vital assets in this business. Her experience in the performance world is something that sets Shelby apart. Our daughter ended up auditioning at and being accepted to several schools, and ultimately decided to attend the New England Conservatory.”

“I am a current voice student of Shelby. Each week I am absolutely inspired and learn so much. Shelby effortlessly shares her vast knowledge of the vocal mechanism, the spectrum of vocal styles/genres (opera, musical theatre, pop, etc.) and always welcomes my many questions. She has encouraged me to branch out of my choral background and into (what I never thought I’d be able sing) musical theatre! I’ve enjoyed singing my favorite songs and am motivated to practice and progress each week. In just a few months, Shelby has helped me achieve my goals with expanding my range, gaining confidence in my voice, and learning how to sing new genres of music. I recommend her lessons to any singer excited to learn!”
— Kara Taylor, Music Teacher and Creative Director of “New Song”
“I have been working with Ms. Shelby for the past 3 years, and she has helped me tremendously through my musical journey. Her knowledge and expertise has been a fundamental factor for my improvement as an artist. She pushed me to use the most out of my potential, whether in musical theatre, opera, pop, or soulful music, and is always ready to answer my questions and doubts. My technique, confidence, and vocal range have improved vastly since starting, and her teaching approach and technique always pushes me to practice the various songs we learn. She is a teacher and a friend, lending a helpful ear when I’m feeling stressed or worried about anything going on. Ms. Shelby has helped me put my feelings, both negative and positive, into my music, ultimately improving my singing ability and performances.”
— Namita Manoj, NC Governor’s School, NC Master Chorale Youth Choir
“Shelby Cox is the true example of a well-rounded, multifaceted artist—and even more than that, she embodies Juilliard’s motto of an “Artist as Citizen.” She is a natural leader, generous collaborator, and kind colleague, and she was an invaluable member of the Vocal Arts community during her time at Juilliard. Shelby’s incredible work ethic and superb organizational abilities are clear to anyone who meets her. She has a keen sense of the many different aspects of a conservatory education, from the audition process to classroom work, from voice lessons to coachings, and from the rehearsal room to the stage. During her time at Juilliard, Shelby had leading performances in our Showcase Scenes program, Vocal Arts Cabaret, and Liederabend Series, just to name a few, showing her diverse talents across many different kinds of vocal repertoire. I consider myself lucky to have worked with Shelby during her time as an undergraduate Vocal Arts student at Juilliard, and I know she would be fantastic resource for anyone looking to major in vocal performance.”
